As the 2022 Titanic Expedition comes to a close, we want to recognize our partners for their help in making our mission a success. This expedition was made possible by the contributions of our supporters and Mission Specialists.
We were proud to work with Horizon Maritime for a second year and look forward to continuing our partnership for many years to come. Horizon Maritime’s vessel, the Horizon Arctic, and her excellent crew led by Captain Gilles Poirier supplied the capability and skill necessary to work safely and successfully in the North Atlantic. Miawpukek Horizon, whose goal is to cultivate seafarers from the Miawpukek First Nation, was a great partner as well. Their intern became an integral member of our operations team.
We also relied on A. Harvey Logistics for a second year. Their tremendously capable team made the complex logistics of international equipment transport and loading problem-free. This process is invisible to most observers but is crucial to any expedition.
Inmarsat provided satellite communications services that allowed our crew to connect with operational support, other team members, and family across the globe. Inmarsat’s rich history of supplying satellite communications has roots in the maritime communications requirements that resulted from the Titanic’s sinking. Connecting with outside resources was an important safety factor in our operations, and we were impressed with Inmarsat’s Fleet Xpress high-speed broadband satellite connection.
SubC Imaging’s camera and lighting equipment enabled us to bring back stunning images of the Titanic. We are grateful to the SubC team for the loan of their remarkable, deep-sea cameras and lights and the support of their entire team.
eDNAtec provided the team with scientific instruments for collecting water samples to conduct the first-of-its-kind environmental genomics analysis of the 3800-meter-deep artificial reef, researchers aim to develop a richer picture of the biodiversity on and around the wreck of the Titanic.
OceanGate Foundation played a key role in supporting the work that will change what the world knows about the wreck and the deep ocean. The Foundation supported a team of scientists and researchers working to assess the wreck site and create GIS maps that will include layers documenting the biological and physical features of the wreck. The team also established long-term monitoring sites to study the wreck’s biodiversity and stability.
The 2022 Titanic Expedition Science Team includes Chief Scientist Dr. Steve W. Ross; Dr. Murray Roberts, University of Edinburgh; Dr. Lea-Anne Henry, University of Edinburgh; Dr. Anna Gebruk, University of Edinburgh; and Lead Geneticist Beverly McClenaghan from eDNAtec. The expedition archaeology team includes Chief Archaeologist Dr. Bridget Buxton, University of Rhode Island; Dr. Rod Mather, University of Rhode Island; and Chris McCabe, Gray & Pape Coastal Archaeologist & GIS Specialist.
Veteran Titanic divers PH Nargeolet and Rory Golden were invaluable to our expedition for their expert knowledge of the wreck and their experience in submersible and scuba operations. Their passion for preserving the Titanic’s legacy and enthusiasm for sharing their knowledge with Mission Specialists made this expedition truly a unique experience.
Dr. Marc Burdick, Dr. Charles Abramson, and Dr. Ann Jarris joined our crew as expedition physicians for a second year. We are extremely grateful that they devoted their time and expertise to our expedition. They are all accomplished adventurers who also took on operational roles with skill and enthusiasm.
Mark MacLennan, the lucky grand prize winner of Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Canada’s Titanic Contest, joined us for Mission 4. We were happy to welcome him aboard and proud to support Make-A-Wish Canada’s mission to care for children with critical illnesses.
Our crew enjoyed having two First Nations artists-in-residence join us. Alex Antle and Nelson White are both accomplished artists in their respective mediums. We’re eager to see how their experiences might influence their work.
We welcomed incredible Mission Specialists from around the world. They played active roles throughout the
Titanic Expedition. They received training and supported the mission by managing communications between the Titan submersible and the topside crew, running cameras while on dives, participating in dive planning, working with OceanGate Expeditions’ crew members on dive preparation, and even driving dinghies in the wild North Atlantic.
It’s inspiring to see our Mission Specialists roll up their sleeves and learn new skills. It’s what makes our expeditions unique. Each member of our crew plays a meaningful role in accomplishing our shared goal of exploring the ocean. We could not do this work without each of the Mission Specialists who joined us for the 2022 Titanic Expedition – thank you! We hope to see you again on future expeditions to explore the deep ocean.
